Heavily armed militants besieged the Angwan Rukuba hamlet in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday, resulting in at least ten confirmed deaths and numerous injuries.
Eyewitnesses said that the attack, which left the community’s people in complete shock and sadness, started at around 8 p.m. when around 20 gunmen attacked the nearby suburb of Gari Yawaye and started firing intermittently, sending locals fleeing for their lives.
The peace and quiet of the neighborhood, which is home to a number of University of Jos employees and students, was reportedly disturbed by the occurrence.
After arriving on their motorcycles, the attackers—who were dressed in the uniforms of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA—moved through sections of the community during the operation, firing shots that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, according to a local resident.
“NDLEA uniforms were worn by the attackers.” Before firing from inside the store, they even purchased a few things from a vendor. It was fortunate for the shop owner to get away. He added, “Four others weren’t fortunate.”
The resident continued, saying:
Ten people had died by the time they departed, and numerous others had been hurt either by stray gunfire or while attempting to flee.
He continued, “It is pitiful that the army and other security personnel arrived nearly an hour after the gunmen departed.”
Calls to the state police spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, and the Operation Enduring Peace, or OPEP, spokesperson, Captain Nicholas Oteh, went unanswered, making it impossible to get their responses.
