Any state governor who misuses state police will be sanctioned, says Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu.
Adaramodu made the remark on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television, while responding to questions.
He was referring to the Senate’s passage Wednesday of the controversial State Police Bill.
“Those who misappropriate state police, federal authorities will visit them, governors included. Where a governor is found to be employing state police to advance a partisan, religious, or sectional purpose, the federal police may intervene.
“The law states that if the federal police are found operating outside the scope of its constitutional mandate, then it is within the law to assume the roles and functions of a state police force.
“These are important safeguards to make sure that no one uses state police for personal or political interests,” he said.
The lawmaker further stated that the state police will be financed by both the federal and state governments.
“The burden of paying for state police will not fall entirely on the states.
“The federal government will also come in by providing additional funding to ensure that state police are well equipped and well resourced to carry out the growing security responsibilities entrusted to them,” he said.
