The chair of the Nigeria Bar Association Electoral Committee, Monday Ubani, has said that local governments should control security, adding that this would make the country safer.
Ubani made the assertion Thursday in response to questions in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’.
The comment came after the Senate passed the controversial State Police Bill into law on Wednesday to address the worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
“Security is a local thing. As a chairman of local government, I know every entry and exit point in my area and I can work with the security agencies and state government to protect my community.
“Nigeria will be far safer if local governments are empowered to take charge of security. State police is the solution to Nigeria’s over-centralised policing system.
“We need state police. The police force is over-centralised and is not doing enough to protect lives and property.
“I commend this administration and the 10th National Assembly for the historic step of decentralising Nigeria’s policing system to enhance security,” he said.
