Lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ali Ndume has called on the Nigerian government to make the Senate a part-time job.
Ndume told Trust TV in an interview on Friday that the Senate and all legislators do not go to the office on a daily basis but only during plenary and at various committee levels.
Nduma also pushed for the introduction of part-time roles in the Senate where members would only be paid when they are sitting at plenary or committee level.
“I said it, what are we doing?” he asked. We’ve recessed a few times. Let’s get paid for sitting down. You’re paid to sit. If you’re not at the table, you don’t get paid.
“And for me, we can even make the National Assembly work part time. “We all met for an emergency meeting on Wednesday for this year, important national issues, that is the state policing even though I have reservations as to the speed and the way they are doing it.
The Senate is a council of elders. “You don’t just sit down one day and say, ‘Hey, the President wants state police,’ and just pass it overnight.
You’re supposed to sit down, think about it, and get input. The bill has been passed by us. Did the state police go off today?”
