Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly called Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The family of the renowned actor confirmed his death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, through social media announcements by his wife, actress Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In announcing his passing, the family referred to him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to allow the family mourn privately.
Olu Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942, and went on to establish a career that spanned several decades.
He received his professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, after which he appeared in British television productions and international films.
Jacobs eventually became a major figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, earning respect for his work across theatre, television and film.
His career earned him several awards and national recognitions.

In 2011, he received the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR, for his contribution to Nigeria.
He was also honoured with the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Throughout his career, Jacobs worked with numerous actors and filmmakers and became one of the most recognisable veteran performers in the Nigerian film industry.
His contribution to African cinema extended beyond his performances, with his work as a film executive also contributing to the industry.
The late actor is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, children and grandchildren.
His passing marks the end of an era for a performer whose career helped shape Nigerian theatre, television and film over several decades.
