Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has weighed in on conversations about marriage and women’s independence, saying a woman should not be defined by her marital status.
The actor shared his perspective during an appearance on the In My Opinion podcast, in a clip posted on Instagram.
Arukwe explained that marriage can involve considerable demands on women, citing the physical responsibilities of pregnancy and childbirth as well as social expectations, including taking a husband’s surname.
“I’ve never really been an advocate of marriage because I feel like it’s more tasking for the woman. She’s the one that bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen,” he said.
He noted that society was gradually moving away from the belief that marriage was necessary for a woman to achieve fulfilment or establish her identity.
“So, I feel society is now beginning to catch on to the fact that marriage doesn’t define or make a woman,” the actor added.
Arukwe further discussed the pressure women historically experienced to marry by their mid-twenties or early thirties.

He recalled how unmarried women were often questioned about their relationship status, with older generations comparing them with women who had already started families at similar ages.
According to him, contemporary attitudes are changing, and some women are now making deliberate decisions to remain single or live without children.
The actor said he had encountered two or three women who did not want to become mothers.
His observations highlight the changing perspectives surrounding marriage, motherhood and personal choice in modern society.
Arukwe’s remarks also draw attention to the need to respect individual decisions rather than judging women according to traditional timelines for marriage and childbearing.
