The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced that two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region.
In a statement on Saturday, the NCDC said the development had raised fresh concerns over the need for heightened disease surveillance and preventive measures.
It confirmed that the two individuals had been isolated, while health authorities had commenced contact identification and listing as part of efforts to prevent possible transmission.
“Laboratory tests are also being conducted to determine whether the suspected cases are indeed Ebola infections,” the NCDC added.
The Ebola update further stressed that the identification of suspected cases should not be interpreted as confirmation of an Ebola outbreak, noting that their status would depend on the outcome of laboratory investigations.
It urged Nigerians to remain calm but vigilant, advising members of the public to maintain proper hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and adhere strictly to public health guidelines.
