In the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Timothy Daniel, a 13-year-old child, was tragically killed by a soldier on guard duty. The Nigerian Army has opened an investigation into the incident.

The incident, which happened near Akongntekong Road in Ete early on January 1, 2026, caused anger and conflict in the neighborhood.

Captain Lawal Mohamed, the Army Public Relations Officer for 2 Brigade, Mbiokporo, confirmed the development and stated that the Military Police had formally assumed control of the situation.

“The Military Police handled the event, and an inquiry is currently underway. “We’ll follow due process,” he promised.

The incident happened at around 12:05 a.m., according to witnesses, while the victim and his 15-year-old sister, Miracle Daniel, were making their way home from a crossover service at Mount Zion Full Gospel Church.

Anthony Akpan, a local, informed Channels TV that Miracle had momentarily crossed the street close to the late former clan leader Clement Idemudo’s home, which is said to be a property for expats.

According to Akpan, Miracle was approached inappropriately by a soldier stationed at the home. The soldier allegedly got hostile and threatened her when she rebelled and spoke up.

According to reports, Timothy, who had been waiting close by, approached the soldier about the harassment, sparking an argument.

Timothy was shot dead when the soldier allegedly fired his pistol, escalating the tension. According to reports, the teenager passed away instantly.

According to Akpan, “other security personnel arrived later and removed the boy’s body, while the soldier then retreated into the compound.”

The murder caused fear and interfered with the local New Year’s celebrations. Akpan further disclosed that during the subsequent disturbances, a car owned by Obong Uyai Udoiwod, a former political advisor to the chairman of the Ikot Abasi Local Government, was wrecked.
