According to Jide Ojo, a public affairs specialist, if Peter Obi loses the party’s presidential ticket, he might leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before the 2027 elections.
In an interview with Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Ojo predicted that Obi would lose the ADC presidential ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, especially if the party chooses to hold indirect primaries.
Ojo said that if Obi lost the ADC ticket to Atiku, the former governor of Anambra State may leave the party in order to pursue his goal of becoming president.
According to rumors, Atiku has been a highly generous spender during party primaries.
“I can see Peter Obi probably going to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for another party, assuming, without conceding that Atiku emerges in a free and fair primary in ADC,” he stated.
According to Ojo, Atiku is not only interested in the ADC ticket but also wants to be on the front lines of choosing the ADC’s nominee.
According to Ojo, “there are concerns in some quarters that he might outspend Peter Obi, especially if they are going to conduct indirect primaries.”
But according to the expert, Obi has a respectable fan base, and many influential politicians followed him to the ADC.
On December 31, 2025, I watched the live broadcast of his previous defection from the Labour Party to ADC. On that day, at least four senators from the Southeast, sixteen members of the Southeast House of Representatives, and an unknown number of members of the State House of Assembly announced that they were joining him.
“I didn’t see any serving lawmaker or governor defecting with Atiku Abubakar when he defected weeks prior, towards the end of November,” he continued.
Obi’s announcement that he would run for president in 2027, according to Ojo, is proof that he is not prepared to take a backseat to anyone.
“If someone declares, ‘I will be on the ballot,’ only the party’s main candidate will receive the certificate of return, even though the ballot features the party emblem.
He stated, “What Peter Obi means is that he is not going to play second fiddle.”
