Godwin Obaseki, the former governor of Edo State, has criticized Monday Okpebholo, his successor, for allegedly leaving an N600 billion debt.

Recall that during a press conference to commemorate Okpebholo’s first year in office, state Commissioner for Information and Strategy Kassim Afegbua stated that road contractors owed him more than N178 billion.

According to Afegbua, Obaseki was giving contractors instructions to get loans and work without making plans for payment.

However, Obaseki’s media assistant, Crusoe Osagie, quickly refuted the accusation, claiming that nations like the United States see Nigeria as dangerous and have even threatened to use force.

“I believe it’s critical that we emphasize the risks associated with some of these careless remarks they are making. It is safe to say that Nigeria is currently in danger of going extinct.

“Our government has been deemed reckless, shameful, and embarrassed by the head of government of another country.

Therefore, when remarks like these start to emerge from a state like Edo, which is also run by the All Progressives Congress (APC), it validates the attitude that we are getting from other countries.

In Abuja, Nigeria has a Debt Management Office. No government, whether local, state, or federal, has the authority to take out loans or enter into any kind of debt arrangement without the Debt Management Office’s knowledge and consent.

Please let me know if the N600 billion he mentions is listed in the Debt Management Office.

“At least you would find it in the DMO if Obaseki had such debt or had taken out such loans.

He stated, “So he just comes out and spews lies and makes this statement, giving the impression that touts are in charge of the state.”
