President Bola Tinubu announced a significant security reorganization on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, dismissing Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun and replacing him with Assistant Inspector General Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Disu, who most recently oversaw the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is anticipated to take office right away and supervise a command shift across the country.
Egbetokun’s term, which started in June 2023 and was prolonged past the customary retirement age, ended abruptly when he was instructed to write his handover notes following a meeting at the Presidential Villa, according to sources from the Presidency and the Police Service Commission.
Disu, a career officer with more than thirty years of service, was known for his tech-savvy, intelligence-driven policing while leading the Rapid Response Squad and the Intelligence Response Team.
The appointment is a calculated attempt to give the Nigeria Police Force new tactical vigor in the face of growing security threats and ongoing high-profile investigations.
He is Nigeria’s 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, succeeding IGP Olukayode Egbetokun.
There will soon be official announcements from the Presidency and Force Headquarters, and a formal handover ceremony is planned for Louis Edet House in Abuja.
