In order to improve credible elections, Senator Nenadi Usman, the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, has advised political parties to increase their base of support at the grassroots level. He has emphasized that successful elections depend on successful grassroots mobilization.
Speaking about the Electoral Act 2026 at a town hall gathering in Abuja, Usman stated that a political party’s presence and readiness at the polling place determine its success or failure.
She praised lawmakers for allowing results to be transmitted electronically to INEC’s IReV portal, but pointed out that the debate around Section 60(3) has been overblown.
She emphasized that in order to preserve votes and guarantee accurate results, parties should use agents who have received proper training.
Instead of depending just on INEC, Usman advised parties to fortify their internal structures and carry out their duties with diligence.
Party rules should be followed when it comes to Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires candidate nominations by consensus or direct primaries.
“Nigerians’ collective resolve and vigilance, not just statutory provisions or institutional mechanisms, will determine the credibility of the 2027 elections,” she stated.
