All public servants and political appointees who want to run in the 2027 general elections have been instructed by the Kaduna State Government to resign from their positions by March 23, 2026.

The directive reportedly came after the Independent National Electoral Commission published an updated election schedule.

Elections for the president and members of the National Assembly are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the electoral body’s updated calendar.

On February 6, 2027, state governors and members of state assemblies will be elected.

According to the schedule, political parties will start holding primaries on April 23, 2026, in order to get ready for the general elections.

Abdulqadir Muazu Meyere, the Secretary to the State Government, stated that the decision was made to guarantee that candidates for political office adhere to the electoral regulations.

He clarified that before party primaries start, public office holders who plan to compete for elective office must resign from their jobs.

Therefore, in order to prevent any breach of the election regulations, the state administration requested that the impacted officials submit their resignations by the specified date.

In light of the aforementioned, I am to inform any political appointees and other government personnel who wish to run for elected office that party primaries are scheduled to start on April 23, 2026.

In keeping with this reality, this circular advises all such officials and appointees to step down from their positions by March 23, 2026. This is to allow potential candidates to fulfill the requirement that they retire from office for one (1) month prior to applying for elective positions,” the statement stated in part.
