After a significant financial intervention by the Taraba State government, the ongoing issue at Taraba State University (TSU), which prompted academic staff to go on an indefinite industrial strike, may soon be resolved.

The state governor, Agbu Kefas, personally visited the university campus in Jalingo, the state capital, on Thursday and announced the approval of N3 billion to settle unpaid entitlements owing to staff unions. This event became apparent.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, chapter of the school has been on strike for a long time, and the involvement is largely viewed as a critical step toward resolving the strike.

The governor authorized the prompt delivery of N200 million as part of the settlement while speaking to university community members. Additionally, he approved N100 million in monthly installments starting in April and continuing until the accrued arrears are paid in full.

In the presence of union leaders, including ASUU Chairman Dr. Mbave Joshua Garba, Kefa, the university’s visitor, was seen to have also signed documents approving the disbursement of the monies as a symbolic demonstration of his adherence to the deal.

After months of disruption due to the industrial action, members of the university community have praised the intervention and described it as a great step toward resuming regular academic activity.

To discuss the government’s proposal, the university unions’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called a congress meeting.

In order to allow lectures and other academic activities to continue, observers anticipate that the unions will think about abandoning the strike.

The conclusion of the congress will determine the ultimate decision, according to some lecturers.

The ultimate cancellation of the strike is anticipated to settle Taraba State University’s academic schedule and provide relief to thousands of students whose studies have been halted by the conflict.
