Reno Omokri, a former presidential adviser, has criticized Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential contender, for allegedly associating with problematic people.
Omokri questioned the consistency of Obi’s anti-corruption position in a post on X on Wednesday, claiming that the former governor of Anambra State is now siding with individuals he had previously distanced himself from.
“Observe the caliber of individuals Peter Obi is interacting with. Barons of corruption and alleged looters, Omokri wrote.
“And this is the same Peter Obi who declared he would not be a part of any ‘structures of criminality,'” he continued.
Obi’s rhetoric from the previous general elections, especially his appeal to religious groups, was also mentioned by Omokri.
He claimed that Peter Obi was chanting, “Church, wake up and take back your country,” as he jumped from church to church in the lead-up to the most recent election.
He said, “Look at the caliber of people Peter Obi wants to bring back to Nigeria.”
Allegations of assets connected to Nigeria’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, were also mentioned by the former presidential assistant.
“Malami Abubakar! A guy from whom a court ordered the seizure of 57 opulent residences, hotels, and other valuable assets valued at ₦212 billion as profits of corruption? Omokri said.
He went on, “A man who was allegedly able to corruptly acquire properties worth ₦212 billion in a country that had over two million homeless, hungry, and desolate Internally Displaced Persons at the time he allegedly illegally acquired them.”
“Peter Obi wants to use these kinds of people to save Nigeria?”
Additionally, he offered an alternative interpretation of Obi’s campaign slogan, which was aimed at religious establishments.
“Nigerians now know what Peter Obi meant when he said, ‘Church, wake up and take back your country,'” he wrote.
He claimed that he wanted to return Nigeria to the days of General Sani Abacha, his old employer, when theft was the official state policy.
“Remember that Peter Obi was employed by Abacha,” he said.
Omokri compared himself to a well-known gangster.
“Maybe Peter Obi would have paid the infamous armed robber Anini a visit of solidarity if he were still alive,” he remarked.
“Obi learned a lot under his beloved boss, Abacha!” he said in closing.
