Professor Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has urged citizens to pray for a deserving successor ahead of the 2027 political transfer while reiterating his allegiance to Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The governor reportedly made the plea during a speech to the entire state, in which he also asked for pardon for any mistakes made during his term.
Zulum reiterated his commitment to protecting persons and property while pleading with the state’s citizens for understanding.
He expressed empathy for those who suffer from insecurity, pointing out that their fortitude continues to be the foundation of the nation.
The governor emphasized the need of unity and group prayers in overcoming the state’s obstacles.
Zulum warned politicians against taking any measures that would jeopardize the state’s precarious peace as political activity picks up steam.
“My dear people, tensions may rise as the political season intensifies,” Zulum declared. However, we need to balance the harsh reality of our security situation with our political interests.
“Let’s prevent politics from undermining the peace we have worked so hard to establish.”
He asked candidates and those who supported them to put Borno State’s interests ahead of their own.
The governor reaffirmed his unwavering devotion to Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Since taking office in 2019, I have treated every member of the political class fairly, justly, and inclusively. I don’t need to stress how devoted I am to His Excellency, the Vice President,” Zulum declared.
He continued by saying that he has kept the confidence of state and federal political stakeholders.
“I have never betrayed the confidence of Borno-born political office holders and members of national and state assemblies,” he declared.
Additionally, Zulum issued a strong warning to anyone supporting insurgents, saying that anyone who did so would be prosecuted.
He promised to identify, track, and prosecute any accomplices who provided intelligence, refuge, or supplies.
President Bola Tinubu’s release of funds to help the Multi-National Joint Task Force and other military activities was praised by the governor.
According to him, the intervention is essential to maintaining the war against insurgency.
Zulum also expressed gratitude to Vice President Shettima for visiting the state on behalf of the President during a recent visit of condolence.
As the state is ready for a new administration in 2027, Zulum asked citizens to be unified and in prayer.
“As we look to the future and choose a new leader for our state, I urge all citizens to fervently pray for a worthy successor,” he continued.
“Let me remind you that power is Allah’s, and He gives it to whoever He pleases.”
Additionally, he emphasized the necessity to maintain peace in the state and cautioned political actors against being exploited to instigate unrest.
