African Democratic Congress (ADC) members and prominent opposition figures are currently in Abuja to address the nation over the party’s leadership problem.
The gathering, which is being held at the Federal Capital Territory’s Yar’Adua Centre, is anticipated to present the party’s stance in light of recent events concerning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, National Chairman of the ADC Senator David Mark, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola are among those in attendance.
Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi are also present.
Former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, Alhaji Kashim Iman, former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, and former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu are among the prominent major figures present at the occasion.
The meeting comes after INEC decided on Wednesday to stop recognizing David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and other members of the party’s National Working Committee while the legal issue over leadership is being resolved.
Additionally, INEC declared that it would not keep an eye on the ADC national convention on April 14 and would keep things as they are till the issue is resolved.
Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, stated in a statement that the commission had also turned down Nafiu Bala Gombe’s plea to take over the party.
According to Haruna, “the commission has also rejected the request to permit Nafiu Bala Gombe to assume the party’s affairs pending the court’s decision.”
He further stated that INEC would cease any communication with party groups.
According to the statement, “it will not deal with any of the contending groups on matters relating to the party’s affairs or receive further communication from them.”
Haruna added that no political activity organized by any ADC section would be observed by the electoral commission.
He declared, “Until the case is decided, the commission will not monitor any meeting, congress, or convention called by any faction of the ADC.”
