Omoyele Sowore, an activist and politician, says that the alleged assassination plot that fellow activist Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, also known as Ijele, talked about is part of a larger and longer pattern of intimidation against people in Nigeria who speak out against the government.
Sowore said that Ofoegbu’s claim is “not an isolated incident,” but part of what he called a coordinated effort to silence people who speak out against injustice and oppression. He did say, though, that these kinds of actions would no longer stop the movement for change.
Sowore said in a post on X, “The assassination plot against me, as revealed by Harrison Ofoegbu, also known as ‘@IjeleSpeaks2,’ is not an isolated incident.” It is part of a pattern of targeted intimidation and violence that is deeply troubling and meant to silence dissent and crush voices that speak out against injustice.
He said that this development confirms what he has long believed: that there are planned efforts to threaten and maybe even kill people who speak out. He says that these actions are “neither random nor accidental,” but were planned out ahead of time.
Sowore also talked about how he and Ofoegbu had met before, including their first meeting at the Federal High Court in Abuja during the trial of Nnamdi Kanu. At first, they didn’t get along, but later they became friends.
He also said that Ofoegbu had been targeted before by being arrested and held for a long time, with bail conditions that he said were hard to meet. Sowore said that there were also plans to move him to another facility where he thought his life might be in danger.
The activist said that these things reminded him of things that had happened to him, claiming that he had survived several attempts on his life, some of which involved security personnel. He also talked about the killing of his brother, Felix Olajide Sowore, in 2021, which he said is still a hot topic.
Sowore said that the threats he received were part of a pattern that started when he was a student activist at the University of Lagos in the 1990s. He claimed that security forces and other groups targeted student leaders at that time.
He said that these actions were meant to make him shut up, but he said they had failed.
People shouldn’t just ignore the recent things that @IjeleSpeaks2 has said.
“I have known for a long time that there have been repeated attempts on my life, even though he didn’t tell me the details of any plot.” But it’s too late now. The fight for complete freedom has already begun. He said, “Nothing can stop it.”
