On Tuesday, the place where the national convention of a group of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala was supposed to take place was empty. There were no delegates or party officials there.

The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja was supposed to host the convention, but it was still empty when it was supposed to start.

A TV Platinum correspondent who was following the event on Facebook said that there were no preparations or activities going on at the venue, and that some important parts of the complex, like the velodrome, were locked.

This news comes at a time when the ADC is in the middle of a leadership crisis, with Bala and another group led by former Senate President David Mark both claiming to be in charge of the party.

Bala’s group had set April 21, 2026, as the date for its convention. This was just days after they turned down the April 14 convention organized by the other group, saying it went against a court ruling that was still in effect.

He had also questioned the validity of the earlier convention, saying that the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that it was not officially recognized.

Since then, the argument has gotten worse, with both sides claiming to be the party’s rightful leader and leader ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Justice Emeka Nwite is currently hearing the case in the Federal High Court. This is because INEC refused to recognize Bala as acting national chairman.

At the time this report was written, Bala’s group had not given an official reason for the lack of activity at the convention.
