The Federal Government has banned the use of the prefix ‘Dr’ by persons with honorary degrees in official, academic or professional capacities.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made the announcement on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while briefing State House correspondents after a Federal Executive Council meeting.

“The recent trend we’ve seen with the award of honorary degrees has shown an increasing abuse and politicisation of this academic privilege.

18 + “We have seen awards used for political patronage, for financial gain, and we have seen awards conferred on serving public officials, which as part of the ethics of honorary degree awards should not be.

A new directive means honorary graduates will no longer be able to style themselves ‘Dr’.

Rather, they have to put the entire honorary title after their names.
