Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has revealed that Peter Obi was not committed to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, during his time with the party.
Lawal stated this on Tuesday in a Prime Time interview on Arise Television while speaking on the recent happenings in the ADC.
His comments followed Obi’s exit from the party along with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who cited internal disagreements and uncertainty over the party’s direction as reasons for their departure.
Lawal said: “We never felt his heart was in it, with Obi’s involvement in the party.
He said that Obi was brought into the coalition after it was already formed and did not fully integrate into its structure.
Lawal said the party leadership attempted to placate the former Anambra State governor by allowing him to pick the organising secretary, a position he said was very crucial in the party’s electoral processes.
He said the decision was meant to assure Obi of transparency within the system, even though questions about his level of commitment still remained.
Lawal also suggested that Obi’s resignation might be tied to his unwillingness to participate in a competitive primary election.
He said the ADC is committed to ensuring a fair and open process for all aspirants, adding that the party has persons with various political ambitions.
The former SGF also denied reports that his support for Obi in the 2023 presidential election was a continuation of a political pact, saying their relationship then was based on common purpose.
His political decisions, he added, were based on personal convictions, not loyalty to any one person.
