A part-time student of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, has been shot dead in his car near the main entrance of the school’s Ugbowo campus.
The incident happened on Sunday under circumstances that are not yet fully clear, it was gathered.
A video circulating online showed the aftermath of the assault.
Reports said the victim had just finished his semester examinations before the shooting, though this has not been officially confirmed.
The management of the University of Benin has dissociated the members of the institution from the incident and said the killing may not be unconnected with suspected cult-related activities outside the university environment.
The university expressed sadness over the incident and appealed to students and staff to remain calm and security conscious while continuing their academic activities in a peaceful manner.
The institution also assured the university community of its commitment to making sure that the campus environment is safe.
At the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the killing.
