Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, and former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, have emerged as top contenders for the vice presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Party sources told The Whistler that consultations over who will run with the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are at the final stage.

A source familiar with the discussions said the party is weighing a number of factors before choosing a running mate.

“They are looking at different factors including political strength, regional calculations and acceptability across the country,” the source said.

Amaechi, who later contested the ADC presidential primary, was said to have come second behind Atiku with 509,397 votes.

But he has refused to accept the primary result, alleging irregularities and widespread disenfranchisement.

Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-governor of Imo State, who has both legislative and executive experience, is also being considered.

Duke, who ruled Cross River State from 1999 to 2007, is seen by some party chieftains as a candidate who can attract support from outside the traditional party lines but doubts exist about his present political muscle.

Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate with 1,846,370 votes in the party’s primary.

The former vice president served under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007 and has made several previous attempts to become president.

He had also contested or sought the office in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.

Atiku has called the 2027 race his “last outing”.
