In an attempt to modernize the state’s public transportation system, the Abia State Government has started the broad implementation of the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment method for the Green Shuttle Bus Service.

The Ministry of Transportation, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, is spearheading the program, which intends to give locals a smooth commute.

Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, said in a statement released on Sunday about the Abia Ministry of Information handles that the government views the development as a significant step in its efforts to create a digitized, transparent, and effective transportation environment.

It claims that the Abia Connect Card, also called the “Abia State Card,” removes the annoyances of cash payments, such as delays, disagreements over change, and income leaks.

“The inconveniences of cash transactions are something we are purposefully avoiding. A single touch is all it takes to commute using the Abia Connect Card. It is dependable, efficient, and made to guarantee that our public transportation system functions well for everyone, the statement said.

According to the government, the first card is currently free for locals and is available at authorized agent locations and specific Green Shuttle ports in Aba and Umuahia.

In order to obtain the card, prospective users must provide their ABSSIN; those without one may register using the Abia Pay portal.

The card must be funded, subject to a ₦50 top-up charge, and then tapped on the payment device upon boarding. A confirmation sound will sound to confirm the successful payment.

In addition to the fact that the Green Shuttle Service runs both intra-city and inter-city routes, it was mentioned that the card has no expiration date and that money deposited onto it is always valid.

“The inter-city fares are ₦800 from Aba to Umuahia and ₦1,000 from Umuahia to Ohafia,” Kanu stated. In Aba and Umuahia, city services are provided on specified routes for a fixed fee of ₦150.

In an effort to improve accountability and transparency in the transportation industry, the state administration encouraged travelers to utilize the free cards that are currently being distributed.

“Our goal is still to establish Abia State’s transportation system as a shining example of creativity, effectiveness, and openness in Nigeria.”

According to the statement, “I urge every resident to acquire their cards and participate in this revolutionary process towards a more intelligent Abia.”
