Nkwo Nnewi Spare Parts Market was closed for a week by Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo after the market disobeyed a directive from the government to start opening on Mondays.
According to a news statement issued by Dr. Law Mefor, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Chief Evarist Uba, the governor’s special adviser on trade and markets, closed the market on the governor’s behalf.
This occurs just three weeks after Soludo visited Onitsha Main Market and shut it down due to its Monday closure.

“Low adherence to Mr. Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s directive to terminate Monday sit-at-home in Anambra State led to the market’s shutdown.
Along with the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, AVM Ben Chiobi (Rtd), and Nnewi Mayor, Hon., Chief Evarist Uba, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, issued the order to close the market on behalf of the governor. “Therefore, the market, which is scheduled to close at midnight today, Monday, February 23, 2026, will reopen on Monday, March 2, 2026.”
He cautioned that in order to prevent confrontations with law police, traders and patrons are encouraged to stay away from the market until Monday of next week.
When the market reopens on Monday, he said, if compliance is not significant, the market might be closed even more.
