Betty, the late former governor of Ondo State Rotimi Akeredolu’s widow, has responded to critics on her choice to join the Labour Party (LP) in advance of the 2027 election.
According to reports, Betty, who is running for the Imo East senatorial seat, claimed in an Instagram post that she has been the target of assaults and abuse because of her choice.
Betty, whose late husband belonged to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said she has selected a platform that acknowledges women in leadership roles and shows inclusivity.
Betty claims that purpose, people, and progress are more important to her than party devotion.
Despite residing in Ondo State, Betty emphasized that she is the daughter of Emeabiam in Owerri West Local Government of Imo State.
“I will not apologize for choosing purpose over politics,” the message said.
“I’ve witnessed support, criticism, and even attacks in the past 24 hours due to my choice to run for the Imo East Senatorial seat with the #LabourParty Nigeria.
“Let me clarify. In the Owerri-West Local Government of Imo State, I am the daughter of Emeabiam. That is my identity, my foundation, and my duty.
Yes, I have lived and worked in #OndoState, but Nigeria needs to get over the notion that geography limits service.
“I have selected a platform that honors women in leadership and reflects inclusivity.
“Party allegiance is not the issue here. It has to do with people, progress, and purpose. I’m on task. I’ll be ready. And I’m determined to have a significant impact.
“Party or progress—what really matters to you, biko?”
