Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of Guinea-Bissau, is safe there, according to a senior government source on Thursday, only hours after the military took over the West African country.

Jonathan is one of the prominent election observers and African leaders who are currently stuck in Guinea-Bissau following a coup d’état on Wednesday by military members, according to earlier reports.

Evacuation planning and diplomatic arrangements have been initiated for Jonathan’s return to Nigeria, according to the source, who spoke to Vanguard under condition of anonymity.

The source said that Nigerian security guards are a member of a multinational task group that is presently in the nation to support Jonathan’s and other Nigerian officials on assignment’s safety.

“Nigeria is making the required preparations to guarantee their safety and enable their return,” the source said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier declared that the Federal Government denounced the coup and called for the return of constitutional governance.

Nigeria expressed support with Guinea-Bissau’s democratic institutions after the takeover and reaffirmed its opposition to an unlawful change of government.

According to diplomatic channels, the nation is still dedicated to cooperating with regional allies in order to stabilize the situation and ensure the security of foreign officials and observers who are trapped by the uprising.
