Following traffic jams at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on the first day of its nationwide Go Cashless initiative, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, or FAAN, has asked drivers and airport patrons to exercise patience.
In a Sunday post on its X account, FAAN stated that the traffic jam was caused by numerous cars trying to register for the new Go-Cashless cards at the toll lanes in spite of earlier announcements and advertising urging early registration at its designated locations.
“The Go Cashless Program at MMIA and NAIA formally launches today, in accordance with the Federal Government’s order on cashless transactions, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria gratefully thanks all drivers and airport customers.
“We note the increase in traffic that was seen at the access gates today. Many drivers chose to register for their Go Cashless cards at the gates this morning despite the extensive exposure, notices, and repeated announcements given before to the start date, according to the statement.
While acknowledging the short-term delays, FAAN pointed out that big system transfers sometimes include initial adjustment difficulties.
To improve traffic flow, the authority said it had expanded registration locations, sent out more staff, and improved cooperation on the ground.
In keeping with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s campaign to encourage digital transactions, the Go Cashless project forbids cash purchases at executive lounges, parking lots, and access gates.
Piloted in Lagos and Abuja since late 2025 in collaboration with Paystack, the program seeks to lower the hazards involved in cash handling while increasing processing speed, transparency, and operational efficiency.
The FAAN recommended that drivers get Go-Cashless cards at access gates, FAAN commercial offices, or participating bank branches and make plans for future visits.
In order to guarantee smoother operations in the days ahead, the authority promised the public that continuous monitoring and modifications would be made.
“As we work diligently to stabilize and streamline the process, we appeal for your patience, understanding, and cooperation,” FAAN stated, reaffirming its dedication to offering a world-class, safe, and efficient airport experience.
