Deadly Jos Attack Sparks Protests Across Plateau

On Monday morning, hundreds of irate Plateau State residents flooded the streets in protest of the horrific Palm Sunday attack that killed multiple people in Jos North Local Government Area, defying the state-imposed curfew.

Anguwan Rukuba, the neighborhood where the Sunday night attack happened, was the site of the demonstration.

Videos from the demonstration that went viral on social media showed locals yelling and calling for immediate government action in response to the area’s ongoing murders.

Some protesters voiced their dissatisfaction over what they saw as the state’s government’s inability to stop recurring attacks.

One of the locals taking part in the demonstration claimed that the government’s curfew did not address the ongoing security issues.

“People are outside due to yesterday’s attack.” The demonstrator stated, “They chased the security guards because they are not helping right here.

He said that residents were forced to escape for their life when the attackers struck during a power outage.

“There was no light yesterday between 7 and 8 p.m., so these people firing—as in straight shooting on rapid—a lot of people had to flee for their lives,” the protest stated.

The demonstration was then broken up, according to witnesses, when Nigeria Police Force officers entered the area to scatter the throng.

Witnesses said that when officers prepared to use tear gas, they chased the demonstrators.

The police intend to shoot at us, therefore people are fleeing. According to an eyewitness, they wish to use tear gas.

The demonstration came when Anguwan Rukuba was attacked on Sunday night by suspected gunmen who were allegedly wearing military uniforms and started shooting at locals.

According to witnesses, the assailants entered the area at around 8 p.m. and began shooting randomly at people in what they characterized as a bustling market area.

Nyam Isaac, a resident, claimed that during the assault, the attackers harmed a number of persons.

Around eight o’clock at night, gunmen arrived in Angwan Rukuba and began shooting at individuals at random. The environment is a market. Witnesses reported seeing them wearing soldier’s khaki. He stated, “They left many injured.

On social media, the tragedy has caused a great deal of controversy, with many Nigerians voicing their concern over the ongoing killings in Plateau State.

Oyindamola, a different user, questioned how the government was handling the ongoing violence.

A 48-hour curfew was implemented in Jos North Local Government Area by the Plateau State Government in reaction to the attack.

In a statement released on Sunday, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, confirmed the development.

“The government has imposed a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect in response to the tragic security incident that occurred at Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba today, Sunday, resulting in the loss of lives,” the statement said.

While assuring the populace that security forces had been called in to capture the perpetrators, Governor Caleb Mutfwang strongly denounced the attack, calling it unwarranted and brutal.
