Monday Ubani, SAN, the chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association’s (NBA) Electoral Reform Committee, claims that there is much opportunity for error in the Senate’s proposed Electoral Reform Amendment Bill.

Ubani made this claim on Saturday while answering questions during an Arise Television interview.

He emphasized that nothing has changed and stated that physical collation at collation centers is still a part of both electronic transmission and transfer.

He maintains that IREV does not compute or tabulate findings, and that it is only for seeing them.

The lawyer went on to say that the Senate’s version concerns the majority of Nigerians since it allows for communications failures that might be used illegally.

The bill that the Senate is proposing allows for electoral error. There will be a harmonization committee to examine any discrepancies and create a unified version that will be given to the president for approval.

Additionally, I’m pleased that the House of Representatives completed theirs last year, and the Senate passed theirs as well. However, there are some disparities, and the committee will meet on Monday to reconcile those positions.

In terms of the 2022 Act, the law’s stance was that it assigned INEC the duty of prescribing or publishing guidelines regarding the mechanism of transfer.

Our voting system has always had a conflict between the polling station and the collation center.

“People have seen a situation where the results at the polling station will be different from the results at the collation center,” he said.
