Peter Obi, a well-known representative of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has joined the ongoing demonstrations at the National Assembly in Abuja against the Senate’s refusal to require the electronic transmission of election results.
According to reports, demonstrators stormed the National Assembly on Monday morning in protest at the Senate’s move.
Speaking at the protest site, Obi criticized the Senate’s stance on the electronic transmission of election results and urged lawmakers to refrain from imposing any limits on the electoral process.
“Allow the election to proceed according to the normal procedure,” Obi stated. We will accept whatever the result is. Why add uncertainty after the procedure?
Following the Senate’s rejection of e-transmission of election results, Nigerian youths and pro-democracy activists gathered outside the National Assembly’s entrance in a protest known as “Occupy National Assembly.”
According to reports, there was a significant security presence at the event. Employees from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, or NSCDC, were sent to keep the complex safe.
Insistence that electronic transmission is essential to openness, credibility, and public trust in Nigeria’s voting process, the demonstrators are urging the National Assembly to reevaluate its stance on the voting Act Amendment Bill’s e-transmission clause.
The demonstration was still peaceful as of the time this story was filed, and security personnel were keeping a careful eye on things there.
