Six people, including a pregnant woman and five final-year nursing students, perished in a deadly car accident on Tuesday along the Kwara axis of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso expressway.
Families and coworkers of the dead were reportedly in grief after the disaster, which happened in Kwara State’s Ote district. This was especially true since the students were reportedly their route to take their second semester exams.
According to reports, a number of the victims were declared dead at the scene of the collision, while others died to their injuries after being taken to an unidentified hospital for emergency care.
As of the time of publication, there were still few clear information regarding the vehicles involved and the crash’s immediate cause, but it was reported that the impact had seriously disrupted traffic on the busy roadway.
The deceased students were identified as 500-level undergraduates enrolled in an Oyo State higher education institution’s Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science program.
The unfortunate tragedy apparently happened when they were traveling to take their second semester exams.
Their academic community is in mourning after the loss, which colleagues called “heartbreaking and painful,” given that the students were nearing the end of their degree.
Rosemary Alo, the Federal route Safety Corps’ (FRSC) Kwara State Commandant, confirmed the accident, stating that it happened in the Kwara end of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso route, more precisely in the Ote region.
“To restore normal traffic flow on the highway, our personnel are working in collaboration with the Kwara State Command,” she stated.
But she didn’t reveal right away how many cars were involved or what was thought to have caused the collision.
