In order to present and discuss new electoral standards in advance of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met with leaders of political parties on Tuesday at its Abuja offices.

Political party members, secretaries, and chairmen attended the meeting to examine the suggested framework for conducting the polls.

The Labour Party (LP) was represented by Senator Nenadi Usman, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was represented by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu.

Presenting recently prepared electoral guidelines intended to direct the conduct of the 2027 elections was the main topic of the conference.

The commission claims that the Electoral Act of 2026, which calls for modifications to current electoral processes, made the study necessary.

The INEC Chairman clarified that the revised rules comply with the new electoral law’s provisions.

He pointed out that rather than depending on antiquated rules, political parties and other stakeholders must function within the changing electoral structure.

The commission also announced plans for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise as part of the election preparations.

According to INEC, online pre-registration will start on August 18, 2025, while in-person registration will start on August 25, 2025.

Through the operation, eligible Nigerians will be able to update their voter information or register to vote.

Plans for a national voter registration revalidation process were also disclosed by the commission.

In order to improve the electoral roll’s integrity, INEC claims that the procedure will assist in eliminating duplicate entries and the names of deceased individuals.

In the meantime, discussions about electoral reforms are still ongoing, especially in relation to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026’s provisions.

The Senate’s stance on the real-time electronic transmission of election results to INEC’s Result Viewing portal is one of the controversial topics.

In advance of the 2027 elections, political activity is already picking up steam.

While opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi are reportedly investigating a coalition platform under the African Democratic Congress to challenge the ruling party, President Bola Tinubu has received support from the All Progressives Congress for a second term.
