The violent standoff at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja was deemed sad and pitiful by Ini Ememobong, the party’s recently elected National Publicity Secretary.
According to reports, Ememobong said this on Tuesday while answering questions during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” show.
He questioned the procedures surrounding the contentious meeting and claimed that the violent altercation shows a troubling deterioration in Nigeria’s democratic culture.
Ememobong emphasized that the incident put party members in risk and expressed regret that every Nigerian election cycle is becoming worse.
The attorney accused the ruling party of fostering animosity against the opposition, pointing out that a number of Nigerians have already perished from inhaling tear gas.
“Is it a NEC meeting?” he asked. INEC is required to oversee every NEC meeting. The fact that this is occurring after six election cycles is really regrettable and sad.
Firm democratic consolidation is necessary. Democratic values ought to be respected. They ought to be a part of our culture. Sadly, it seems like things get worse with each election cycle.
The minority will have a voice and the majority will get what they want in a democracy. However, the minority is currently attempting to force its will on the majority.
