JAMB: Students must not pay for system failures – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has stated that Nigerian students shouldn’t be held responsible for systemic shortcomings.

This was said by Obi on Monday in a statement that was uploaded on his verified X Twitter.

He was responding to the concerns expressed over the difficulties faced by students at different educational institutions throughout the nation.

After some CBT centers were banned due to suspected violations, the former governor of Anambra State was picky about the experiences of students at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Amawbia, Anambra State, office.

“Corrective measures were expected to follow,” he said.

Regretfully, I encountered the same uncertainty and bustle last Friday when I went by there again. After asking more questions, I was told that there are such circumstances in a few other Nigerian states.

“A more compassionate and equitable approach is feasible, even when authorities may have good reasons for punishing centers.

In order to stop more mistakes, centers that are the subject of an inquiry may be permitted to continue providing a restricted range of services while being closely monitored.

The authorities might nevertheless temporarily use already approved centers under strict monitoring to relieve the strain on state offices if it is difficult to approve new centers promptly.

“There will be severe repercussions as registration ends on the 26th. To gain access, many hopefuls travel from far-off communities; some even spend the night in Awka. Some will miss the exam if nothing urgent is done; this isn’t because they weren’t prepared, but rather because the system didn’t work for them.

“Students cannot be forced to endure the shortcomings of a system that we have all helped create in one way or another.

“Instead of placing blame, prompt and compassionate action is needed to guarantee that no young person’s future is endangered by preventable administrative bottlenecks.”
