Segun Sowunmi, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been invited by the Ogun State Labour Party (LP) to run for governor in 2027 on its platform.
When Oluwabukola Soyoye, the state chairman, and other members of the Labour Party visited Sowunmi at his home in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, on Friday, they reportedly made the demand.
The state needs a new era of government, and Sowunmi fits with the party’s ideology and vision, Soyoye said, urging the former spokesperson to former vice president Atiku Abubakar to join the Labour Party and fly its flag in the 2027 governorship contest.
“We would like you to join the Labour Party and run for governor in the upcoming election,” she continued.
In response, Sowunmi applauded previous presidential candidate Peter Obi for igniting the Labour Party’s rising popularity and praised the party’s ideological stability.
He pointed out that the Labour Party’s success in the most recent presidential election, when it received more than six million votes as opposed to the ruling party’s eight million, showed its expanding power and natural approach to politics.
Citing the state’s enormous growth potential and the necessity of addressing important issues, Showunmi stated his willingness to contribute to Ogun State’s development.
“The governorship eligibility for 2027, with all due respect, I have looked at the horizon, from the toughest to the least, and I cannot find anyone among them who is more eminently qualified, more prepared, and more intentional of policy of governance than me,” he declared.
“All I have done is wish, work, pray, and suffer for this Nigerian nation to be a great nation that we can pass on to the next generation.” I have not spared myself or the meager resources at my disposal in order to continue pushing.
Although he noted that the current governor has made noticeable progress in road development when compared to past administrations, he also acknowledged the difficulties Ogun State has, particularly the state’s inadequate road infrastructure.
He emphasizes that Ogun State needs leadership with a better grasp of its economic and developmental potential and claims that the current administration’s biggest flaw is its inability to properly utilize the state’s numerous growth poles.
“I acknowledge that the present governor’s style of governance raises important and difficult problems. One of them is that Ogun State, our beloved state, is now a huge source of humiliation since it serves as a signpost for poor roads everywhere, to the point where visitors to our state simply erupt in angry invective. However, this does not imply that he hasn’t worked on some roads. To be honest, he has driven more kilometers than the others.
“He did not fully commit himself to a deep understanding that Ogun State has growth poles everywhere,” he stated in response to the difficulties.
