A sand pit used to make bricks collapsed at Ridawa village in Kano State on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, and several brick workers are thought to have died.
According to reports, the event happened in the Ghari Local Government Area as workers were excavating a deep hole for the production of bricks. Suddenly, the pit collapsed, burying numerous people under the rubble.
According to eyewitnesses, the collapse caused panic in the neighborhood as locals and coworkers raced to the scene in a last-ditch effort to save those who were trapped.
The fatalities were reportedly buried behind piles of sand when the building suddenly collapsed while they were working down inside the hole.
Sani Bala, the member for Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency, verified the tragedy and disclosed that initial indications indicated that approximately ten people may still be trapped beneath.
He urged the appropriate authorities to act quickly to assist ongoing rescue efforts.
“We urgently need help to rescue those who are still trapped. The community is making every effort, but expert rescue assistance is needed, he stated.
Villagers and rescue personnel were still sifting through the debris as of the time this report was filed, racing against time to find those buried alive.
But there were still a number of casualties who needed to be saved, which raised concerns that the number of fatalities might increase dramatically.
Locals bemoaned the fact that these kinds of incidents frequently occur at rural brick-making facilities, where employees frequently labor in dangerous situations without proper safety precautions or supervision.
According to reports, the catastrophe has caused the community to enter a state of grief, with families anxiously awaiting word on their loved ones while rescue operations continue.
