Deji Adeyanju, an activist attorney, has recommended that Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, be granted temporary parole.

He called the decision to temporarily release El-Rufai from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission’s (ICPC) custody so he could attend his mother’s funeral “humane.”

Adeyanju stated in a statement he signed that any interim release should be accompanied by a commensurate judicial command because El-Rufai was remanded by a court order.

According to him, the action strikes a balance between upholding the law and honoring human dignity.

“Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was remanded in custody on the court’s order, so the decision to grant him temporary release from Independent Corrupt Practices Commission custody to attend his mother’s burial is both humane and commendable, but it must be supported by a court decision or order,” he stated.

Such compromises, according to Adeyanju, should be viewed as humanitarian and legal actions rather than as weakening accountability.

The choice to permit Elrufai to attend his mother’s burial illustrates the need to strike a compromise between the requirements of justice and regard for basic human decency.

He said, “Bail, whether administrative or judicial, should not be misconstrued as an escape from accountability, but rather as a lawful and compassionate accommodation in deserving circumstances.”

He pointed out that by praising the government for upholding due process while exhibiting empathy.

He declared, “This action by the authorities is a welcome demonstration of empathy while upholding the rule of law.”
