Claims that the ruling party wants to create a one-party state have been refuted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Eagle Square, Abuja, the president expressed his belief in a legitimate opposition capable of questioning, challenging, and improving governmental policies.
Tinubu expressed his hope that more politicians would join the APC and acknowledged the party’s notable development as a result of defections.
“Let me reiterate, especially to those who frequently bemoan and misinterpret us: we do not seek a one-party state,” he declared. Vibrant and robust competition is essential for democracy. As a political leader and statesman, I support a legitimate opposition that can examine, challenge, and improve policies. In this way, good governance is attained and statecraft advances. That is how countries progress.
“Through credible leadership and transparent party management, anchored in a reliable, verifiable database of our members nationwide,” he instructed new party officers to maintain the vast political organization.
He said that “our size or numbers, but our unity” has always been the APC’s greatest asset.
“Electoral losses are not the only way political parties fail. They frequently falter when ambition takes the place of discipline or when ego trumps ideology. When private interests jeopardize the common good, they fall short. At all costs, we must resist those inclinations.
As a result, this Convention needs to make it very evident to Nigerians and the rest of the world that our party is powerful, cohesive, committed, and prepared for the future.
Additionally, we need to keep in mind that this party is more than just a vehicle designed to help ambitious politicians win elections. It was established as a means of bringing about national change and as a place for anyone who aspires to create a Nigeria in which all Nigerians, regardless of tribe, religion, geography, or social standing, can live with dignity and hope and where institutions run smoothly, opportunities abound, security reigns, and poverty decreases.
