Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former head of state and civilian president, was hosted by former military president General Ibrahim Babangida. At his hilltop mansion in Minna, the capital of Niger State, on Monday, January 19, 2026.
Political chess experts are aware of the visit’s nature and have begun to speculate that it may be related to the 2027 presidential general election.
Before heading straight to the elder statesman’s home, Obasanjo was greeted by protocol personnel from the Niger State Government House upon his arrival via the Ahmed Bola Tinubu International Airport in Minna.
After a 30-minute private discussion between the two former leaders, Obasanjo went back to the airport.
According to one of the reports, the visit might have something to do with the nation’s problems and the impending general elections in 2027.
Recently, Obasanjo has been in the news due to rumors that he is involved in political maneuvers intended to create a ticket for Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to run for president and vice president of the coalition-led African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to the rumors, the proposed ticket will initially run against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the party’s presidential ticket. If it is successful, it will then launch a larger opposition effort against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 reelection campaign.
According to the allegations, Obasanjo is purportedly in charge of the arrangement, which also includes a backup plan for Obi and Kwankwaso to run on a different platform in the event that they are not granted an ADC ticket.
Additionally, it was believed that Babangida had pushed Kwankwaso to join the ADC instead of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), a move that commentators characterize as a component of a larger political strategy.
Babangida and Obasanjo have not yet issued any statements regarding the rumors.
But in political circles, their meeting on Monday has been seen as an additional step toward these permutations.
