The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been encouraged by former presidential adviser Bashir Ahmad to reevaluate the general election dates for 2027, pointing out that they fall during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
INEC already announced the election schedule, setting the dates for the governorship and state assembly elections on March 6, 2027, and the presidential and national assembly elections on February 20, 2027.
Ahmad responded on his 𝕏 Twitter, calling his stance a “respectful observation” after the dates were revealed.
“This is a polite remark in light of the announcement that the dates for the next presidential and national assembly elections are February 20th and March 6th, 2027, respectively,” he said.
The suggested dates, in his opinion, coincide with the holy month of Ramadan.
He went on to say, “The suggested dates coincide with the holy month of Ramadan, when many Muslims spend a lot of time fasting, praying, and reflecting on their faith.”
Ahmad contended that Muslim voter turnout may be impacted by elections held around Ramadan.
A significant portion of the public may find it difficult to participate in such a crucial national exercise during Ramadan, he noted, if the goal is to promote full and inclusive participation in the political process.
“During this time, many Muslims tend to focus on their religious obligations by reducing their involvement in demanding worldly activities.”
When organizing national events, the former aide emphasized the importance of taking Nigeria’s religious plurality into account.
“Considering the sizeable Muslim population in this nation, it could be beneficial to reevaluate the schedule in order to guarantee greater participation and convenience for all residents. In the interest of inclusivity and national unity, I sincerely hope that this observation will be interpreted,” he said.
