Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship was taken away from them by the Confederation of African Football, which sparked anger in Dakar and a determined refusal to return the trophy, sparking a full-fledged crisis in African football.

The CAF’s decision in the 2025 final, where hosts Morocco were given a 3-0 victory after the game was deemed a walkover, is said to be the source of the controversy. The ruling came after head coach Pape Thiaw authorized Senegal’s dramatic stoppage-time exit after Morocco was granted a late penalty.

Senegal’s walk-off violated the game’s rules, according to CAF. Senegal, however, has responded quickly and resolutely.

The decision has been rejected by government representatives, who have called it “unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable.” Additionally, they have called for an impartial international inquiry into the circumstances behind the decision and formally accused CAF of corruption.

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye changed his profile photo to the AFCON trophy in a symbolic display of support, outlining the nation’s position as tensions rise.

Senegal has expressed worries about claims that its individuals are being held in Morocco, which has expanded the scope of the dispute. An already tense situation has become much more tense due to the claims.

There is no indication of compromise within the Senegalese Football Federation. The nation’s stance has been strengthened by Secretary General Abdoulaye Sow’s insistence that the trophy will not be given back.
