The government of Senegal announced on Tuesday that a student had died as a result of altercations between students and police about stipend payment delays at a university in the west African nation.

The institution claimed in a statement that the disturbances started on Monday at Sheikh Anta Diop institution in the city, Dakar.

In the statement, the government spokeswoman added that Abdoulaye Ba, a second-year medical student, died as a result.
Students at a number of Senegalese institutions have staged intermittent protests in recent months, demanding payment of their stipends.
