According to a source, lawmakers in Kano State who support Governor Abba Yusuf are currently debating whether to start the impeachment process of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the state deputy governor.

If Gwarzo chooses not to defect with the governor, the parliamentarians want him to step down, according to Daily Trust.

Gwarzo’s refusal to desert alongside the governor has prompted calls for his resignation following Yusuf’s defection to the APC.

On the condition of anonymity, a top official in the deputy governor’s office told the aforementioned outlet that his principle was not ready to step down unless Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso gave the order.

“To be honest, he won’t step down. He is also in danger because he is awaiting Kwankwaso’s order.

The source claimed, “I can tell you that some people close to him had advised him to resign even before now, but he is waiting for a directive from his godfather.”

The Kano State House of Assembly has stated indicated no official matter concerning the impeachment of the deputy governor has been submitted before the legislature.

The Assembly’s spokesperson, Kamal Shawai, told the publication that the House would not return to plenary until February and was now on recess.

Shawai clarified that although parliamentarians had informally discussed the governor’s defection, no formal correspondence or motion pertaining to the impeachment process had been presented to the Assembly.

“The governor’s defection was one of the many issues that were brought up and discussed last Monday, and those lawmakers then made their formal decisions,” he stated.

But he emphasized that the House was not currently considering the impeachment matter, pointing out that the recess had put a halt to legislative activity.

According to him, any formal examination of the proposal would only take place when parliament reassemble.

“If there is anything like this by February 2, when the House resumes, I am sure it will be brought up for deliberation,” he continued.
