The Oyo State government’s decision to install Sharafadeen Alli, a candidate for governor on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, as a beaded crown-wearing Oba in Ibadanland is causing friction in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The decision to appoint Alli, who presently serves as the National Assembly’s representative for Oyo South Senatorial District, was reportedly made public on Thursday.
According to our correspondent, Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, signed a letter announcing the intention.
In a letter dated March 26, 2026, to Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Ojo stated that the coronation was long overdue.
High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, High Chief Kola Babalola, and High Chief Alli were named to be installed as Obas.
The coronation ceremony has been set for April 3, 2026, according to Ojo, who also stated that Mapo Hall will host the event.
However, it was reported that the statement has caused friction in some areas of Ibadan because the matter is now being discussed, particularly among the political elite.
The scheduled coronation may be a positive step or a political retaliation, according to several organizations and individuals analyzing the situation.
Some believe that the coronation won’t have a detrimental impact on Alli’s ambition to become governor, while others perceive it as an attempt to thwart it.
Even if Alli is installed as an Oba wearing a beaded crown, the current legislation does not prevent him from becoming governor, according to an Ibadan native who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“It is a matter of law,” he stated. His desire to become governor is unaffected by the legislation. Even the beaded crown is an option for him. Are you aware that the current Olubadan first refused the throne? He only took it when he was prepared to become Olubadan.
