Even though there had been plans for Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), new information has surfaced explaining why the plan was delayed.

Daily Nigerian reports that Yusuf finalized plans last Friday to declare his defection to the APC on Monday.

According to reports, the governor was supposed to be the first person registered in Kano State under the APC’s new online registration program prior to the postponement.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State, was supposed to accompany Yusuf to his Diso Ward so that he could finish registering on the party’s platform and obtain a membership card.

After that, Yusuf was supposed to go with Ganduje to Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, his hometown, in order to renew Ganduje’s registration on the new portal.

Insiders claimed that the plan was shelved after the governor was told to meet with important APC leaders in Kano to get their approval before formally declaring his defection.

He was anticipated to see Ganduje and Barau Jibrin, the deputy president of the Senate.

It will seem as though the governor is denigrating Ganduje, Senator Barau, and other APC leaders if he leaves without meeting them. Additionally, it won’t be good for him, according to a source with knowledge of the development.

The governor would defect on January 12, according to Platinum Post, while other sources stated that the date is still subject to change.

They said that “any day after meeting with Kano APC leaders,” the defection can occur.

According to other sources, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the defection to be postponed in order to make last-minute attempts to court Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Yusuf’s political godfather.

According to sources, Kwankwaso’s purported intention to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) changed the APC’s political strategy.

According to information obtained by the Presidency, Kwankwaso met with Olusegun Obasanjo and Peter Obi, and it is possible that the two may work together to oppose Tinubu in 2027.

The insider stated that an Obi/Kwankwaso ticket is a potent combination that can alter the political landscape of the APC.

The source claims that the APC is also concerned that Yusuf’s political power would erode in the absence of Kwankwaso’s support.

In the absence of Kwankwaso, the governor’s political options are severed. Tinubu is therefore currently evaluating Governor Yusuf’s defection.

In actuality, rather than the other way around, the governor is courting the APC. Because of this, there are currently no clear guidelines about who will receive what following the defection, the source continued.

According to a different group of sources, the governor personally asked for an extension so he could convince additional members of the National Assembly and Kano State House of Assembly to defect with him.

Unverified sources, however, suggested that Yusuf may not have made up his mind due to the criticism he is receiving in Kano State.

These sources claim that the governor is now thinking about ending the defection plan completely and making amends with Kwankwaso.
