A state of emergency has been declared throughout the area by ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States.

Omar Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission, made the announcement on Tuesday at the 55th ministerial session of the Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.

The meeting was called in reaction to several failed uprisings and coups that had affected the sub-region’s nations.

According to Touray, the events underscore the “urgent need to invest in the security of our community and the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy.”
