Sumner Sambo, the political editor at Arise News, has warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may be going too far with its political strategy before the next elections.
Sambo, who spoke on The Morning Show on Monday, warned against what he called “overconfidence” in the party. He pointed out that the last general election was very close.
He said that the APC would be making a bad political decision if it thought it would win the next elections easily. He also said that the party’s current approach might not work.
He says that the APC’s plan seems to have unintentionally brought together opposition leaders on a single platform.
He talked about important opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose supporters, he said, got results close to those of President Bola Tinubu in the last election.
Sambo said that the best political strategy for the presidency would have been to keep the opposition groups divided so that they couldn’t come together.
Sambo said, “I just want them to not be too sure of the political process.” I think it would be bad politics for them to think that the President will win easily, based on how the last election went. I think the APC is overthinking things and taking too many risks.
“I mean, if you’re not overstrategizing, tell me how you would be a great political strategist and then let all of your opponents who got a lot more votes than you in the last general election be on the same political platform and in the same political umbrella.
“I thought the best thing President Tinubu could do for politics would be to make sure that the Peter Obi group, the Atiku group, and the Kwankwaso group all stay where they are.”
“It may seem like it will be much easier for President Tinubu to win, but the presidency and the APC-led federal government are doing something politically that has brought all the opposition together under one umbrella. This includes the smaller parties that don’t want to work together, and they are all thinking about coming together to fight the APC.
“I think the APC has gone too far.” I think President Tinubu has done a good job of playing politics, but if he’s not careful, it could hurt his numbers in the next election.
You can tell that President Tinubu barely won the last election because the numbers were so close. And I don’t think he would have let all these people and groups get together like this.
“I think the tactics are being pushed too far.” So the people who make plans for the APC need to think again and not be too sure.
