Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has called on leaders, aspirants and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to desist from destructive politics.
In a statement on Wednesday, Shettima made the call, urging all and sundry to exercise restraint and maintain party unity as political consultations for the 2027 general elections kick off.
In the statement entitled: “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof”, the Vice President likened the APC to a family that must not destroy its own house over internal ambitions.
He said the political season brings the familiar fever of democracy, noting that consultations have started across wards, local governments, party offices and private homes.
“The political season is upon us again. We don’t need to bring the roof down. We all should desist from destructive political.
“Aspirants are making calls, elders are receiving visits, supporters are counting delegates, and the marketplace of ambition is alive again.
“This proves that our democracy is still alive. It is evidence that power in our republic is still a thing to be negotiated, contested, persuaded and earned. But each political season has its own temptations.
“It carries the lure to mistake dissent for treason, rivalry for hostility, choice for rejection and media interpretation for fact,” the statement read in part.
