2027 Elections: Labour Party Unveils Screening Committee For Aspirants

The Labour Party has constituted a National Screening Committee to supervise the screening of aspirants ahead of its nomination primaries for the 2027 General Elections.

The party disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, stating that the action was supported by Articles 20(1B)(d), 20(2)(d) and 27 of the Labour Party Constitution and the Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primaries.

It was reported that the committee will be headed by Nenadi Esther Usman, the National chairperson of the party. Other members include Mrs Oluchi Oparah, Comrade Mohammad Salisu, Pastor Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Dr Chibuzo Okereke, Dr Oluayewoh. The Hon. Secretary will be Iheanacho Obioma.

The statement was jointly signed by national secretary Iheanacho Obioma and Nenadi Esther Usman.

The committee is tasked with vetting aspirants seeking the party’s tickets for the presidency, governorship and National Assembly seats. It is expected to operate within the ambit of the Labour Party constitution, the 2026 Electoral Guidelines, the Electoral Act 2026, INEC regulations and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The panel is also expected to verify the authenticity and completeness of documents submitted by aspirants, ensure compliance with statutory and party eligibility requirements and recommend qualified candidates for the primaries.

Also, it is required to submit its report within the timeline set in the party’s schedule of activities and perform any other duties assigned by the national leadership.

As preparations for 2027 intensify, the party has called on committee members to perform their duties with integrity and in the overall interest of the party.

The submission of completed nomination forms and the commencement of screening is scheduled to commence on Monday May 18, following the earlier release of the party’s schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
